4 Books for all the Single Ladies

I am being honest when I say that I do not read books from the romance genre or anything remotely close to it. However, I wanted to put my toe in the water just to know enough and here is what I got from it!

May is here and that means the beginning of wedding season. However, not all are the "committed" types and some enjoy their freedom and single-hood. Therefore, here are five books for single women looking for some good literature and comfort book. Go ahead and read more than one. No strings attached!

All the Single Ladies: Unmarried women and the rise of an independent nation by Rebecca Traister

Do not be misled by the ironic Beyonce reference, this book takes a thoughtful mien at the experiences and growth of single women during the course of America’s history. Several women are single across this country and it is not news or abnormal. However, the quantity of single women now is higher than ever, as is the average age of marriage. Adding personal anecdotes with research from over 100 interviews, Traister heads off to explain the diverse social movements that created the current environment with a sense of humor and cleverness.

Gone Girl by Gillian flynn

It is perhaps a cliché at this point to say that Gone Girl makes a girl feel amazing about being single. However, clichés normally become clichés because they are true. This book does not create a picture perfect marriage. This psychological thriller about a husband dealing with the disappearance of his wife and being suspected as the alleged murderer is enough to make you want to thank your stars for your single status. This will definitely remove the sulkiness of a single life.

Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado

This book is a mixture of short stories filled with fairy tales, science fiction, suspense and probably a hundred other genres. The main character of these stories is centered to a woman and all the stories revolves around her. These stories range from unexpected surprises to extreme weirdness. What stays constantly predominant is the female body in each story. She depicts a world where women are gradually fading until they are invisible, the weird side effects of a weight loss surgery and so on, each story more entrancing than the one before.

All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks

This book was like a knocked my breath out and twisted my gut in a good way. Bell Hooks observes how traditional ideas and ideologies of love can make us feel more secluded and lonely. She also points out how romantic love is provided more importance over other kinds of love. I’ve found wisdom in quotes like: “To return to love, to get the love we always wanted but never had, to have the love we want but are not prepared to give, we seek romantic relationships. We believe these relationships, more than any other, will rescue and redeem us. True love does have the power to redeem but only if we are ready for redemption. Love saves us only if we want to be saved.” This book is a good way to celebrate love, while also deepening your understanding and relationship with it.
