A review on Debjeet Mukherjee's "Voyages":

Star rating:

Debjeet Mukherjee's Voyages:

It's norm for us to reach to a book written by the famous and recite the poems written by the old, but I think it's time for us to make space for the upcoming local poets!

Eliot, Owen and Rabindranath are all wonderful poets/writers and their work will stay on for decades to come. But, among these men there is a raise in a new generation of poets, sharing and expressing their stories and one such poet is Debjeet Mukherjee.

Although his information is available on his website, I’d like to reiterate about him here:

Debjeet Mukherjee is a post graduate student of economics at the University of Calcutta. Literature and reading has always been an indispensable part of his curriculum. He has been writing for almost a decade now, constantly improving the outlook and reach of his works to national and international audiences through online magazines and competitions. Due to his fascination for historical events, Debjeet Mukherjee is also a keen numismatist. Occasional photography while on vacation and tours may also qualify as one of his hobbies. An introvert by nature but prolific in the love for his passion to follow an artistic mind full of creative ideas, his works are sure to create a lasting impression on any generation as he pens down abstract feelings of life that is relatable through myriad experiences in people.

I'm sure that if you've read my reviews, you'd hardly find one on poetry. But his work had a different appeal to me.

Let me tell you a bit about Debjeet and reasons as to why you should read his work:

I read his work from age 14 and onward, although he writes it in the opposite way. While he had an amazing aptitude for literature at such young age, you can see his writing mature with time, his observation on the slightest of things blooming, how he has grown to appreciate the little things and call out effects you’d have never thought about. He touches upon topics which resonates with a sense of familiarity and newness. If you're a millennial, you can relate to him.

Debjeet writes poetry from age 14 to age 21. Even at the tender age of 14, you will appreciate his sense of observation and experience. He anchors to god and frequently goes back to it at several stages of his poetry and there is a sense of familiarity with it. He speaks about this world in such vast variations that it is truly something to witness from his eyes. At age 21 he begins to speak about friendship and love. The innocent romance in its simplest way will truly put a sad smile on your face. His take on friendship in its truest form brought chills to my body ( I am not making this up. Trust me!)

I wish not to give away a lot here because the essence of his work will be lost in translation.

If you are one of those people who are considering poetry or even a dedicated poetry enthusiast, you should read his work. But, if you’re one of those people who like the ancient poetry, this is not for you. Debjeet is a modern poet and you can see that in his work. However, he touches upon topics that are common and you could consider it for light reading.

I’m glad that my journey with poetry started with his work.

All in all, I rate his book 4/5 stars!
