Synopsis by K.B. Richards:

Marcella Burke, an ambitious young woman, forms a friendship with a deceitful New York City escort. As Marcella's dreams begin to unfold, she encounters an unimaginable setback––the loss of a loved one. Subsequently, her life spirals out of control, and she struggles to maintain her lifestyle. Her new friend offers a solution to her problems, but it comes with a price. Tough times force her to question her morality, ponder her worth, and cross paths with a man who alters the course of her life forever.

My Review:

The star of the novel, Marcella comes from a very modest family or a good christian family, so to speak. Initially awestruck by the wonders of the big city, she has a tidy life - moves in with her boyfriend and lives in a beautiful, spacious penthouse, visits high-class hotels and restaurants and imagines a perfect life for herself, only to witness a dying relationship while she struggles to remain focused on building her career. Even after she ends her relationship and explores her options with other men, Marcella is constants driven with an intention of wanting more. Enter Victoria - Vicky is an inexplicable woman who seems to posses all the mystery in the world and manages to lure Marcella into a world of luxury and privilege beyond one's imagination. But at what cost? She witnessed a new realm of wonder that she'd never seen during her Catholic upbringing and decides to dip her toe to live a life of a party only to be spiraled into a series of tragic events that destroys her perfect life into pieces.

At several instances in the book, the protagonist associates sex with morality and uses it quiet often. Due to this there is a tendency to make a habit of suppressing such emotions that would eventually manifest itself in mental disturbances which you can see happen with Marcella through the course of the book due to her prudish thinking. It is admirable that Richards has managed to describe sexual intentions without making it erotic or particularly sexy. His attempts to point out the reckless and chaotic behavior Marcella develops that becomes increasingly dangerous as a result of her own doing does not go unnoticed. He makes excellent use of story lines that will want you to keep reading. Apart from the fact that there is real danger for Marcella in the path that she chooses to take, you can see that Richards is helping us figure out what kind of person would be truly attracted to this line of work and what kind of impact it would have on them.  He has added plenty of layers to the plot to altercate with, as she tries to balance her personal and two of her professional lives.

The novel is filled with complexity, layers and a lot of segments based on the leads decision making and how it impacts her life. Richard has truly helped his reader visualize every aspect of this book and understand the emotional dilemma that Marcella is going through without judging her choices. Although, the book has an expected fairy-tale ending, every instance of the book is filled with perfect details that keeps it engaging and edges the readers to continue without setting the book down.

This book doesn't fall into my regular genre of reading and was glad that I actually had the opportunity to read this one because I was exposed to a whole knew style of writing that I was oblivious to and I quiet enjoyed it.
